Pet registration

More than 150,000 dogs and cats are lost or stolen every year in NSW.  Many are impounded because their owner cannot be contacted.  A brown dog and a grey cat laying peacefully side by side

Some may end up being re-homed or even destroyed.  To decrease the number of pets that are euthanised each year, the Companion Animals Act requires that all NSW dog and cat owners have their pets Permanently identified and registered for life.

Microchipping and Registration is a two part process that requires dog and cat owners to:

  1. Have their animals implanted with a microchip from the time they are 12 weeks of age, at point of sale or change of ownership (whichever occurs first).
  2. Register their animals with their NSW local council by 6 months of age. 

Vets, animal welfare organisations and other authorised people can microchip your cat or dog.  Shop around for the best price and service on microchipping. Some vets and animal welfare organisations offer discount rates.

Companion Animal Registration

Registration fees help councils provide pounds, rangers and other pet facilities.

Lifetime registration can be done at any local council.  All NSW Councils are connected to the statewide Register.

When you register you will need:

  • A certificate of microchipping or a letter from the vet or Council.
  • Proof of desexing from your vet or a statutory declaration.
  • Any documents which entitle you to a discount eg: Pensioner card.

Prices

  • Desexed dog - $75
  • Desexed cat - $65
  • Desexed cat or dog owned by a pensioner - $32
  • Entire (undesexed) dog - $252
  • Entire dog owned by a registered breeder - $75
  • Entire cat owned by a registered breeder - $65
  • Assistance dogs - Free
  • Working dogs - Free
